Group 4: Tiara Heredia, Matthew Rafanelli, Marc-Anthony Reynoso and Andrea Salvo
I. Description of Problem or Issue Tiara: Do Zero Tolerance Policies affect behavior off of school grounds? Matt: Do Zero-Tolerance Policies help to prevent cheating? Marc-Anthony: Do Zero Tolerance Policies stop athletes from hazing? Andrea: Do Zero Tolerance Policies act as a deterrent for bullying?
II. Research Summary
Tiara's Research Showed: Matt's Research Showed: After doing my research I found that I was very surprised at how often cheating occurs in school. I knew that cheating was a problem but I never understood how big of a problem it was until I did this research. I learned about all of the standards and precautions that are in place to prevent cheating as well as the consequences cheating brings. The research I have done has lead me to believe that students should be encouraged not to cheat in the first place rather than be punished for cheating after they are caught. Marc-Anthony's Research Showed: After doing my research I actually found that every student is treated equally when it comes to hazing. My primary research was to figure out if student athletes get held to a higher standard then the rest of the student body, according to the hazing zero-tolerance policies set by a school. Many look at one side of the spectrum, where athletes get special treatment than the rest of the students. My research proves that an athlete is considered the same as a regular student who doesn’t plays sports or is not involved in school groups. Every student has the same rules to follow in order to attend school. There are rules that are preventing hazing from continuing. Andrea's Research Showed: Based on my research, I've concluded that zero tolerance policies do not act as a deterrent for bullying. Such policies are reactive and punitive; they do not prevent or educate, and fail to identify or address the underlying cause of misconduct. Zero tolerance policies have been associated not only with a decline in student achievement, but also with an increase in student misconduct, school dropouts, and poor attitudes toward adults. In addition, these policies take a one size fits all approach which limits professional judgement and fails to take into account the intricacies of child development. More successful, alternative approaches to deter students from engaging in bullying behavior include school-wide positive behavior interventions and support, character education and social-emotional learning programs, targeted behavioral supports for at-risk students, modifying space and schedule, and immediate responses to bullying.
